About us
With about 200 Cluster members currently participating, the Green Building Cluster of Lower Austria links and strengthens existing Lower Austrian competencies of sustainable building and living with a focus on:
Refurbishment of Old Buildings to Low-Energy Standards
There are over half a million detached and semidetached homes in Lower Austria. The majority are older and in need of refurbishment. By using modern technologies to improve insulation, ventilation and heating systems and by incorporating elements of passive house technology in finishing details, energy savings from 75% to 90% are entirely realistic – even for older buildings.
In order to keep its member companies up to date on issues related to energy-efficient refurbishment the Green Building Cluster initiates and coordinates several trainings programmes. For example, heating specialists are trained in the installation of ventilation systems with heat recovery for passive houses; master builders and architects are instructed on new renovation methods using passive house technologies. These joint trainings form the foundation for new collaborative product development and research projects.
New Multi-story Buildings to Passive House Standards
One of the greatest challenges of the future is encouraging the construction of new multi-story buildings to passive house standards. Cluster partners are leading experts in this area thanks to networking in the form of cooperation, technology transfer in R&D, and training and continuing education. A key project within the region, the competence center “Future Building,” involves 19 companies engaged in research on new and sustainable construction components and systems in cooperation with R&D facilities. The project initiated by the Green Building Cluster is headed by the Danube University Krems.
Healthy Interiors and Comfortable Living
We spend most of our lives indoors, either at work or at home. Thus the quality of the air we breathe indoors is essential to our health and well being. The improvement of indoor air quality through the use of low-emission construction materials, chemicals and furniture as well as the avoidance of pollutants altogether are central missions of the Green Building Cluster of Lower Austria. Cluster companies gather expertise in high-quality building envelopes, ideal ventilation in indoor living areas, automatic air renewal with heat recovery and pollutant-free interior finishings.
