Organic produced vegetables that are harvested in winter and produced with a low energy input create a new innovative market niche. This niche represents opportunities for farmers to increase their sales because of the potential extension of their existing limited product range in winter.
Innovative solutions for the establishment of organic winter vegetables cultivation in Austria
In order to introduce winter vegetable into the local business market and to raise the awareness among consumers for this topic, the generation of further expertise is required.
The Operational Group consists of 6 farmers (some of them are retailers, too), located in different Austrian climatic regions, and the association of organic production BIO AUSTRIA – Association of Austrian Organic Farmers.
Together with 8 scientific partners and experts they created the following comprehensive project, supported by the European Innovation Partnership 'Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability' and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW).
The Food Cluster of Lower Austria accompanies the project as an innovationbroker.
The estimated outcomes of the work of the Operational Group are to find out suitable species and optimal cultivation dates for winter vegetable cultivation to ensure high quality products in the end. The project provides moreover
